LE STRADE BIANCHE DELL' EROICA
Gravel roads and 'L' Eroica', a leap in the past
L' Eroica with its gravel roads is an event inspired by classing cycling. The first edition of ''L ’Eroica'' started in 1997 in Gaiole in Chianti from the idea of one man, Giancarlo Brocci, who admired the values of a past cycling so much that he wanted to reconnect others to the heritage that inspired much Italian history, literature, culture, and music.
L’ Eroica is also a foundation for the protection and preservation of the last gravel roads in Tuscany. These romantic concepts led to the idea of L’ Eroica, an event that initially saw 92 “hunters of feelings and emotions”, as the creator Giancarlo Brocci defines them.
The route of Eroica covers some of the most beautiful roads in the area of Chianti, Valdarbia and Val d' Orcia, but the highlight is represented by those stretches of white roads that still exist, that allow you to experience the atmosphere of cycling in another era.
From Gaiole in Chianti, you pass through spectacular scenery: the Castello di Brolio, Siena, Montalcino, the Val d 'Orcia, the Crete Senesi, to return in Chianti from Castelnuovo Berardenga. The route of "l'Eroica" covers some of the most beautiful roads in the area of Chianti, Valdarbia and Val d' Orcia.
The great adventure of L'Eroica is not an event that takes place only the first Sunday of October. In fact, the cycling classic on gravel roads for excellence is available throughout the year with the Permanent Path from Gaiole in Chianti that extends for 209 km in a fascinating theory of places and atmospheres that are followed through villages and vineyards, woods and olive groves, squares and pastures that poets and artists have tried to capture in their works and that the cyclist pedaling discovers after pedaling in a joy without end.
L' Eroica must be ridden with vintage bicycles dated before 1987. In case you don't have one, or don't want to take yours with you, it's possible to rent a bicycle for the Eroica by contacting Tuscany Biking that boasts of a large fleet of vintage bikes to rent not only for the event but also for exploring the gravel roads during the rest of the year.
